WestComTrans organizes the export of timber and wood products from Russia to China, European countries, the CIS, and the Middle East — from transport selection to delivery at the buyer’s warehouse. For over 10 years, we’ve operated as a single operator: we select the route ourselves, prepare the documents, handle customs, and remain accountable for the cargo at every stage — no intermediaries, no unnecessary coordination between different contractors.

What’s Included in Timber Export Services

  • Selecting the transport type and route — sea, rail, road, air, or a multimodal scheme — based on shipment volume and destination country
  • Document preparation and verification: contract, invoice, packing list, goods declaration
  • Arranging the phytosanitary certificate and certificate of origin (CT-1), where required
  • Customs declaration of the cargo and support at every checkpoint — from filing to release
  • Consolidation, loading, and securing of cargo with moisture and packaging control per carrier and recipient requirements
  • Door-to-door delivery with status updates on the cargo at every stage

Timber Export Destinations

China

The largest market for Russian timber and processed wood products — boards, beams, plywood, birch veneer. The main shipping methods are rail and sea (containers or bulk shipments), depending on volume.

Europe

Germany, Poland, Finland, the Baltic states — traditional destinations for sawn timber, beams, and glued laminated timber. Road transport is optimal for short and medium distances, and multimodal schemes work well for more remote shipping regions.

CIS and Middle East

Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Egypt — steady demand for wooden packaging, pallets, and wood construction materials. Road and rail transport are more commonly used here, with sea and multimodal schemes for longer distances.

Destination Transport Estimated Time
China rail, sea (container / bulker) 10–20 days
Europe (Germany, Poland, Finland) road, multimodal 3–7 days
CIS (Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan) rail, road 5–10 days
Middle East (Turkey, Egypt) sea, multimodal 12–25 days

Timelines depend on shipment volume, port of departure, and current route congestion — we provide an exact calculation for each specific request.

Timber and Lumber Products We Export

Important note: since 2022, Russia has banned the export of unprocessed and roughly processed round timber of coniferous species and valuable hardwoods — these cannot be exported as raw logs. As a result, the main flow today consists of processed products:

  • edged and unedged boards, beams, glued laminated timber
  • lining boards, molding products, parquet
  • plywood, veneer, particle board, and OSB panels
  • wooden packaging — pallets, crates, spools
  • wood chips, sawdust, shavings, fuel pellets

Species: coniferous — pine, spruce, larch (processed form only); hardwood — birch, oak, beech, ash, aspen. Unprocessed round timber of birch and other non-protected species is handled separately and requires checking current restrictions at the time of shipment.
Moisture content and lumber dimensions are also worth noting: “wet” products (moisture content above 22%, thickness and width over 10 cm) made from coniferous species, oak, beech, and ash are subject to an increased export duty — this measure has been extended through the end of 2028 and is aimed at preventing unprocessed timber from being exported disguised as lumber. For finished, dry lumber of standard dimensions, the export duty and VAT are 0%.

Methods of Transporting Timber for Export

Transport When It’s Optimal Features
Road Small and medium shipments,
Europe, CIS
Fastest for distances up to 2,000–3,000 km,
flexible scheduling
Rail Large shipments, China,
countries with a shared rail gauge
Resilient to weather conditions,
suitable for routes of 4,000 km or more
Sea (container / bulker) Large volumes,
long-distance destinations
Lowest cost per cubic meter,
longer transit time
Multimodal Remote shipping regions,
non-standard logistics
Combining transport types reduces
total cost and minimizes downtime

Customs Clearance and Documents

  • HS code (Group 44 — wood and wood products) — this determines the duty rate and the list of required documents
  • Phytosanitary certificate from Rosselkhoznadzor — required for unprocessed and partially processed wood
  • Certificate of origin CT-1 — for shipments to CIS countries, confirms eligibility for preferential terms
  • Electronic accompanying document (EAD) with a QR code via the LesEGAIS system — mandatory for wood circulation and export since 2022, issued via the lesegais.ru portal or the “LesEGAIS.Mobile” app
  • Awareness of current export restrictions: the export of unprocessed round timber of coniferous species and valuable hardwoods is prohibited, and an increased duty applies to “wet” lumber and beams (moisture content above 22%, thickness/width over 10 cm) of these same species — this measure has been extended through the end of 2028

We take on the verification and preparation of this document package ourselves — the client doesn’t need to figure out which HS code or certificate is required for their particular shipment.

“Timber export is an area where a documentation error costs more than a logistics error. Clients most often run into two things: confusion between the HS code for dry versus ‘wet’ lumber — which can mean a duty difference of several times over — and delays caused by an EAD not being filed in time in LesEGAIS. We resolve these issues before the declaration is even filed, so the cargo doesn’t get stuck at the border. And from there, we take responsibility for the shipment ourselves, from the request all the way to the recipient’s warehouse — the client doesn’t need to figure out which contractor is responsible for what.” – Alexander Morozov, Logistics Specialist at WestComTrans

On average 10–20 days, depending on the transport type — rail is faster, while sea container or bulk shipping is cheaper for large volumes.

Yes, it’s mandatory for unprocessed and partially processed wood. Requirements for finished, deeply processed products may differ — we confirm this for each specific shipment.

For finished, dry lumber of standard dimensions, the export duty and VAT are 0%. An increased duty applies only to “wet” lumber and beams (moisture content above 22%, thickness/width over 10 cm) made from coniferous species, oak, beech, and ash — this measure has been extended through the end of 2028. The exact rate is determined once the HS code, species, and shipment parameters are confirmed.

The main destinations are China, European countries (Germany, Poland, Finland), the CIS (Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan), and the Middle East (Turkey, Egypt). Other destinations are possible upon request.
