Avocado is one of the fruits most demanding of transport conditions: the shelf life of a ripe fruit doesn’t exceed 2–3 days, and any temperature deviation of 1–2°C triggers the spoiling process. WestComTrans organizes international avocado shipping by sea, air, road, and multimodal transport with full customs clearance — from purchase at the supplier through to delivery of the cargo at your warehouse. Special Considerations in Transporting Avocado as a Perishable
Avocados are picked unripe — this allows them to be transported over long distances without losing their marketable condition. Ripening begins only after delivery, at room temperature.
Key parameters during transport:
- Temperature: +4…+7°C for fruit at technical maturity; +13…+14°C — if ripening needs to be paused on a longer route.
- Humidity: 85–90%.
- Storage period at the bonded warehouse (SVKh): free of charge — typically 1 day, after which storage fees for perishables apply.
- Transport: only refrigerated containers or air freight cold storage with continuous temperature control throughout the entire route.
For long-distance sea shipping (20–35 days), we use controlled atmosphere (CA) technology — monitoring the concentration of CO₂, O₂, and ethylene inside the container slows ripening and makes it possible to deliver avocados without loss of taste and texture even from other continents. This isn’t a mandatory option for every shipment, but a tool we offer when the standard refrigerated regime isn’t enough.

Sea shipping is the primary method for delivering avocados in industrial volumes: it’s several times cheaper than air, and with controlled atmosphere technology, the fruit arrives without loss of quality. Air freight makes sense to use selectively — for already-ripened fruit or when timelines are critical.
Multimodal Avocado Shipping
A combination of “sea + road” or “sea + rail” allows the cargo to be delivered from the port of loading to the recipient’s warehouse without transshipment at intermediate terminals and without losing the temperature regime. Countries and Routes for Avocado Shipping
The main exporting countries are Mexico, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Israel, Kenya, South Africa, and the Dominican Republic. Imports from these countries are not subject to the food embargo (extended through December 31, 2026 by decree of the President of the Russian Federation and Government Resolution No. 1653 dated November 28, 2024; the restrictions apply to EU countries, the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, Norway, Ukraine, New Zealand, and a number of other countries that supported anti-Russian sanctions).

- Ports: Novorossiysk, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad.
- Airports: Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Pulkovo.

Customs Clearance of Avocado: HS Code, Duty, and VAT
Avocado is declared under HS code 0804 40 000 0 (group 08 — “Edible Fruit and Nuts”).
- Customs duty: 5% of the customs value.
- VAT: 10% for fresh fruit — the reduced rate, retained for fruit on the Russian Government’s list even after the standard VAT rate was raised to 22% in 2026.
- Preferences: with a Form CT-1 certificate of origin (CIS countries) or Form A (developing countries), the duty can be reduced to as low as 0%.
Sample calculation for a shipment with a customs value of 1,500,000 ₽:
- Duty: 1,500,000 × 5% = 75,000 ₽
- VAT: (1,500,000 + 75,000) × 10% = 157,500 ₽
- Plus the customs fee per the current FCS scale

Documents for Shipping and Customs Clearance of Avocado
To cross the border without issue, the following are required:
- Foreign trade contract and invoice
- Packing list stating the variety, weight, and number of packages
- Transport documents — bill of lading (B/L), air waybill (AWB), or CMR
- Phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country — original, with a notarized Russian translation. Item 14 of the certificate must reference EEC Council Decision No. 157 dated November 30, 2016 — without it, Rosselkhoznadzor will refuse to accept the shipment
- Declaration of conformity with TR TS 021/2011 (“On the Safety of Food Products”) and TR TS 022/2011 (labeling)
- Certificate of origin, Form CT-1 or A — if claiming tariff preferences
