Kiwi is one of the fruits most demanding of transport: the thin skin is easily damaged, and the flesh is sensitive to temperature fluctuations and ethylene. WestComTrans has organized international shipping of perishable cargo for over 10 years and takes on the full cycle — from route and transport selection through to turnkey customs clearance, all under a single operator.
Special Considerations in International Kiwi Shipping
Kiwi is a perishable product, so during transport it’s important to maintain not just the temperature but also the gas regime:
- Transport temperature — from +0.5 to +7°C depending on the ripeness of the fruit and the planned storage period.
- Humidity — 90–95%: under these conditions, firm fruit keeps for up to 4–5 months, versus no more than 10 days at room temperature (around 20°C).
- Ethylene sensitivity — even 0.1% ethylene in the air triggers premature ripening and spoilage of the shipment, so the transport vehicle and warehouse must be equipped with forced ventilation, not just refrigeration.
- Packaging — the fruit is placed in perforated trays or cardboard boxes, with no signs of rot, wilting, or water-soaked flesh; the packaging must allow airflow while also protecting the cargo from mechanical damage.
- Gas environment — the optimal composition for long-term storage: 79% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.03% carbon dioxide.
We calculate the route and select the transport with these parameters in mind already at the request stage, to prevent the cargo from spoiling in transit.

Modes of Transport for Shipping Kiwi
The choice of transport depends on shipment volume, the shelf life of the specific batch, and budget. WestComTrans arranges kiwi shipping via all available methods:
| Mode of Transport | Delivery Time | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Air | 2–3 days | Small and urgent shipments of fresh kiwi with a short remaining shelf life |
| Sea container (refrigerated) | 20–35 days | Large volumes, where cost per kilogram matters more than speed |
| Road | Depends on the direction | Shipments from neighboring countries and within the EAEU, flexible schedule |
| Rail | Depends on the direction | Large shipments over long overland distances, an alternative to sea |
| Multimodal | Optimized for the route | Combination of transport modes to reduce cost and timelines |
Air Shipping of Kiwi
The fastest delivery method — 2–3 days, depending on the availability of direct flights. Suitable if the shipment has already partially ripened or a shortage at the client’s warehouse needs to be closed quickly. Cargo is accepted at the terminals of Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Pulkovo airports — anywhere with temporary storage warehouses equipped with cold rooms and phytosanitary control.
Sea Container Shipping
Cost-effective for large volumes: delivery takes 20–35 days depending on the port of dispatch, but the cost per kilogram of cargo is significantly lower than with air delivery. The reefer container maintains the set temperature regime throughout the entire route, including transshipment at the ports of Novorossiysk and St. Petersburg.
Multimodal Shipping
We combine modes of transport across different legs of the route — for example, sea + road to the recipient’s warehouse. This reduces the final delivery cost without sacrificing timelines, and working with a single operator instead of several contractors removes the risk of miscoordination between carriers.
Suppliers and Seasonality
Importing kiwi from EU countries, the USA, the UK, and a number of other unfriendly states is prohibited under the food embargo (extended through the end of 2026). The bulk of current supplies come from:
- Iran and Turkey — the main volume, December–April;
- Azerbaijan and China — year-round and supplementary shipments;
- Chile — off-season, May–September.
Important: Iran is the largest supplier of kiwi to Russia, and in spring 2026, amid military escalation in the region, the Iranian side temporarily restricted food exports. This may affect availability and delivery timelines on this route — we check the current status with our partners at the route-planning stage.
We work with logistics chains across all of these directions and select the optimal route for the specific country of dispatch, including coordinating terms with the customs broker on the sender’s side — this reduces the risk of additional charges arising from changes in the exporting country’s legislation after the cargo has already been dispatched.
Customs Clearance and Permits
Kiwi is declared under HS code 0810 50 000 0. No base import duty applies to this code. The VAT rate depends on the purpose of the cargo:
- 10% — if the fruit is imported for food use;
- 22% — for other purposes (as of January 1, 2026, the standard VAT rate in Russia was raised from 20% to 22%, while the reduced 10% rate on food products remains in place).
The exact calculation depends on the country of origin and the availability of a preferential regime (for example, duty-free import for CIS countries with a CT-1 certificate of origin).
Customs clearance of kiwi requires:
- phytosanitary certificate — issued in the country of dispatch, mandatory for passing phytosanitary control in Russia;
- declaration of conformity with TR TS 021/2011 “On the Safety of Food Products” and TR TS 022/2011 “Food Products in Terms of Their Labeling”;
- certificate of origin, Form A or CT-1 — if preferences apply;
- invoice, contract, transport waybill — the basic package for submitting the declaration.
The cargo can only be cleared at a customs post with a phytosanitary station. We take on the full document package and coordination with regulatory bodies, so the cargo doesn’t sit idle at the bonded warehouse (SVKh).
Common Mistakes in Kiwi Shipping and Clearance
| Mistake | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Mismatched address or company name across different documents (invoice, waybill, contract) |
Cargo held up at customs pending clarification |
| Incomplete or incorrectly issued phytosanitary certificate | Fine and a ban on importing the shipment |
| Transport without temperature and ventilation control | Spoilage of the fruit, damage to the shipment from ethylene |
| Exceeding the permitted storage period at the bonded warehouse (SVKh) | Additional storage costs, risk of confiscation |
Most issues like these arise not at the transport stage, but during document preparation — which is why we check the full package before the cargo is dispatched.

“Kiwi is cargo that doesn’t forgive logistics mistakes: just a couple of hours without cooling, and the shipment loses its marketable condition. That’s why we never send this kind of cargo on ‘good luck’ — we plan out the temperature regime, route, and document package in advance, so the fruit reaches the client’s warehouse fresh instead of getting stuck at the bonded warehouse (SVKh) over a paperwork error.” – Alexander Morozov, Logistics Specialist at WestComTrans
