Mango is one of the tropical fruits most sensitive to temperature: if the storage regime is broken, the product spoils within a matter of hours. WestComTrans organizes international mango shipping by sea, air, road, rail, and multimodal transport with full customs clearance — from signing the contract with the supplier through to delivery at the customer’s warehouse in Russia. We work with a single operator: no intermediaries, with unified responsibility for the cargo at every stage.

Temperature and Storage Requirements

Mango requires storage and transport at +8…+10°C — at lower temperatures the fruit gets damaged, and at higher temperatures it spoils quickly. The problem is that the refrigeration units at most customs temporary storage warehouses (SVKh) operate at +4°C. This mismatch is the main cause of cargo spoilage during customs delays.
With the correct temperature regime maintained, mango’s storage life ranges from 2 to 8 weeks depending on the variety and ripeness of the fruit. If the regime is broken, this drops to just a few days. That’s why we select an SVKh with suitable temperature chambers in advance and arrange expedited customs procedures for perishable cargo, to minimize the time the shipment spends in storage.
Additional parameters monitored during transport:

  • Air humidity — 70–80%, without sharp fluctuations
  • Ventilation — continuous removal of carbon dioxide and ethylene released by the fruit as it ripens
  • Packaging — ventilated cardboard boxes that prevent direct contact between the fruit

Ways to Ship Mango

The choice of transport depends on the shipment’s urgency, budget, and country of dispatch. We select the optimal scheme for each specific cargo and, when needed, combine several modes of transport within a single multimodal shipment.

Transport Delivery Time When to Choose
Air 1–3 days (including transit flights) Urgent and premium shipments, limited shelf life of the fruit
Sea 20–40 days Large volumes, savings on logistics, sufficient shelf-life buffer
Road 7–15 days Shipments from neighboring countries and the CIS
Rail 10–20 days An alternative to road for certain routes, large shipments
Multimodal Calculated individually Optimizing price and timelines by combining modes of transport

Sea Shipping of Mango

The cargo is transported in refrigerated containers (20′, 40′ High Cube) with the set temperature maintained throughout the entire route. When needed, we use equipment with controlled atmosphere and humidity control — this extends the fruit’s shelf life during a long sea voyage. Clearance takes place at the ports of Novorossiysk, St. Petersburg, and Vladivostok.

Air Shipping of Mango

The fastest delivery method, used for urgent shipments and mango varieties with a short shelf life. Arrival is via the cargo terminals of Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo. The main risk with air delivery is the cargo sitting idle at the temporary storage warehouse if documents are delayed, so we prepare the document package in advance, before the shipment arrives.

Multimodal Delivery

We combine sea, road, rail, and air within a single supply chain — for example, by sea to the port, then by road to the customer’s warehouse. This reduces the final shipping cost compared to direct air delivery and cuts the timeline compared to a pure sea scheme. We operate door-to-door: picking up the cargo from the supplier and delivering it to the customer’s warehouse with no switching between different contractors.

Countries of Origin for Mango

Country Harvest Season Notes
India April — July The birthplace of mango, the world’s largest producer, around 2 million tons per season
Pakistan May — September Sought-after late-season varieties, exports of around 100,000 tons per year
Thailand April — July (with year-round cultivation of certain varieties) The world’s third-largest producer
Egypt June — September One of the key suppliers to the Russian market
Brazil September — March Off-season supplies for other regions
Dominican Republic March — August Exports mainly directed toward Europe and the USA

The main countries supplying mango to the Russian market — India, Pakistan, Thailand, Egypt, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic — are not on the list of countries subject to the food embargo (extended through December 31, 2026), so shipments from these directions face no sanctions-related restrictions.

Customs Clearance of Mango

Mango is imported under HS code 0804500001 (“Fresh guavas, mangoes, and mangosteens”). The base import duty rate is 3%, and VAT is 10% (mango is on the list of food products subject to the reduced rate, which remains in effect even after the standard VAT rate was raised to 22% in 2026). Exact terms may vary for shipments from countries with a preferential regime (CT-1 certificate of origin) — we verify this before submitting the declaration.
Import requires:

  • a phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country
  • a declaration of conformity with TR TS 021/2011 “On the Safety of Food Products”
  • a declaration of conformity with TR TS 022/2011 “Food Products in Terms of Their Labeling”

We coordinate the full document package with the supplier before the cargo is dispatched — this allows the declaration to be submitted on the day the shipment arrives at the warehouse and avoids downtime.

Required Documents

  • Foreign trade contract
  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Transport documents: air waybill, CMR, or bill of lading — depending on the mode of transport
  • Phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country
  • Declarations of conformity with TR TS 021/2011 and TR TS 022/2011
  • Certificate of origin (Form A, CT-1, or CT-2 — if tariff preferences apply)

Phytosanitary Control

As of March 1, 2025, Rosselkhoznadzor abolished the simplified quarantine phytosanitary control procedure. Shipment details must be submitted to the “Argus-Phyto” system 3 days before the cargo arrives, and for products with high phytosanitary risk — such as mango — the original phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country is required. Without the original at the time of inspection, the cargo is placed at the bonded warehouse (SVKh) pending clarification, which is critical for perishable goods.

Packaging and Labeling Requirements

  • Ventilated cardboard boxes, net weight 2–5 kg (4–16 fruits, depending on variety)
  • Each fruit is packaged individually — a cardboard divider or separate cell, direct contact between fruit is not permitted
  • Labeling in Russian (bilingual labeling is permitted): name and variety, country of origin, date of harvest and packaging, shelf life, weight, storage conditions, manufacturer and importer details, the EAC market circulation mark
  • Packaging and the transport vehicle must be disinfected before loading

Common Mistakes in Mango Shipping and Customs Clearance

  • Inaccuracies in the declaration — discrepancies in the product name, weight, or number of packaging units versus the invoice and packing list lead to a full customs inspection and delayed release.
  • A copy instead of the original phytosanitary certificate — the cargo is automatically sent to the bonded warehouse (SVKh) until the original is provided, which for mango means a direct risk of spoilage.
  • An unsuitable SVKh — storage at a warehouse without chambers maintaining +8…+10°C can ruin the shipment within a few days.
  • Missing the deadline for submitting information to “Argus-Phyto” — shipment details must be submitted 3 days before the cargo arrives, otherwise a delay in phytosanitary control is possible.
  • Missing EAC labeling — an incomplete label in Russian is grounds for refusal to release the product.

We check each of these points during document coordination with the supplier — before the cargo leaves the country of dispatch.

“Mango doesn’t forgive delay: a single day of downtime at the bonded warehouse is a risk to cargo quality and an unnecessary cost for the client. We build phytosanitary control, the exact HS code, and the temperature regime into the shipping plan from the start — before the cargo even crosses the border. That’s why with mango we consistently keep the time from document submission to release short.” – Alexander Morozov, Logistics Specialist at WestComTrans
