Lemons are one of the fruits most demanding of logistics: a short shelf life, sensitivity to temperature, and a high cost for errors from delays at the border. WestComTrans organizes the full cycle of international lemon shipping from exporting countries — Turkey, Egypt, Spain, Morocco, Argentina, Azerbaijan — to the recipient’s warehouse in Russia: selecting transport, maintaining temperature control in transit, customs clearance, and door-to-door delivery, all handled by a single operator, with no intermediaries and no gaps in responsibility between the carrier, broker, and freight forwarder.

Special Considerations in International Lemon Shipping

Lemon is a perishable cargo, and this shapes the entire logistics chain. The optimal storage and transport temperature is +1 to +3°C, with humidity at 85–90%. If this regime is broken, the fruit starts to spoil within a few days, loses its marketable condition, and fails phytosanitary control on entry.
Key risks during transport:

  • overheating or overcooling in the reefer container while idle at a terminal;
  • exceeding the allowed time at the bonded warehouse (SVKh) — most temporary storage warehouses at airports maintain a temperature of 4–6°C, which is higher than the norm for lemons, and prolonged storage there accelerates spoilage;
  • improper packaging — without ventilation, the fruit “sweats” and becomes moldy while still in transit.

That’s why the route and mode of transport for lemons need to be planned to minimize the time between harvest and the cargo’s release into free circulation.

Modes of Transport for Shipping Lemons

The choice of transport depends on shipment volume, urgency, and the country of dispatch.

Transport Delivery Time Shipment Volume 特征
Air 2–4 days small and medium shipments maximum speed, more expensive per kilogram, suited for the premium segment and urgent deliveries
Sea (reefer containers) 15–35 days depending on the port of dispatch from 1 container (20–27 tons) the most cost-effective option for large shipments, requires precise calculation of shelf life against transit time
Road 5–12 days (Turkey, CIS countries, Transcaucasia) medium and large shipments optimal for countries with a land border or a short sea leg
Multimodal scheme combined to suit the route any volume combining sea/road/rail reduces cost while keeping timelines reasonable — for example, sea to the port + road to the warehouse

Sea Shipping in Reefer Containers

For lemons from Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Spain, and Argentina, sea delivery in refrigerated containers is the primary method for shipping large volumes. The container maintains the set temperature throughout the entire voyage and is equipped with monitoring sensors, making it possible to track the temperature regime at every stage — from loading at the port of dispatch to unloading in Russia. This reduces the risk of spoilage compared to a standard refrigerated truck, where temperature depends on the condition of a single piece of equipment.
Sea shipping is 3–5 times more cost-effective than air per ton of cargo, but requires a shelf-life buffer: procurement planning needs to account not only for sea transit time, but also for unloading, phytosanitary control, and customs clearance time at the port of arrival.

Countries of Origin: Lemon-Exporting Countries

  • Turkey and Egypt — the main suppliers to the Russian market, with stable year-round volumes and a short transport leg (road and sea via Novorossiysk).
  • Spain and Argentina — seasonal shipments, mainly by sea, with a longer transport leg, requiring precise calculation of shelf life against transit time.
  • Morocco, South Africa — seasonal shipments, delivered by sea via the ports of Novorossiysk and St. Petersburg.
  • Azerbaijan, Abkhazia — short transport leg, delivered by road, minimal transit time.
  • China, Uzbekistan, Iran, India — container shipments, mainly by rail and road via the southern and eastern border crossings.

WestComTrans selects the optimal combination of transport for each route, taking into account the season, shipment volume, and required delivery time.

Customs Clearance and Permits

Lemons are declared under HS code 0805 50 100 0. Clearance is only possible at customs posts equipped with a phytosanitary station — a mandatory requirement for perishable cargo.
Importing a shipment requires:

  • contract (foreign trade agreement);
  • invoice and packing list;
  • transport waybill (CMR, bill of lading, or air waybill — depending on the mode of transport);
  • phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country;
  • declaration of conformity with TR TS 021/2011 “On the Safety of Food Products” and TR TS 022/2011 (labeling);
  • certificate of origin CT-1 or Form A — if available, to obtain tariff preferences.

Code 0805 50 100 0 carries an import duty of 5% (but no less than €0.015/kg) and the reduced VAT rate of 10%, which applies to fresh fruit and vegetables imported into Russia. We verify the current rates as of the declaration submission date — legislation is periodically updated.
We take on the full package: preparing documents, coordinating with the phytosanitary service, and submitting the declaration under digital signature — all you need to provide is the contract and invoice.

Cost of Shipping Lemons

The final cost depends on several factors:

  • mode of transport (air, sea, road, multimodal scheme);
  • country and port/point of dispatch;
  • shipment volume and weight;
  • season (freight rates are higher during peak supply periods);
  • the need for additional services — for example, interim storage at a temperature-controlled warehouse.

We calculate the exact cost individually for each route and volume — there can’t be a fixed “one price for everyone” here, there are too many variables.

Эксперт по экспедированию грузов в порту

“Lemons are cargo that doesn’t forgive delay. Every time, we calculate not just the route but also the shelf-life buffer — from harvest to the client’s warehouse. That’s exactly why we prefer sea reefer containers for large shipments: temperature is controlled the whole way, and the cost is several times lower than air. The client gets a fresh product and predictable timelines, not surprises at customs.” – Alexander Morozov, Logistics Specialist at WestComTrans

Contract, invoice, transport waybill, and a phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country — without it, customs clearance is impossible. The TR TS declaration of conformity is issued separately.
