Bananas are one of the most logistically demanding products in the world. The fruit is cut at the stage of technical maturity, while still green, and requires precise temperature control, humidity control, and minimal transit time throughout the entire journey from the plantation to a warehouse in Russia. An error of 2–3 degrees or a one-day delay at customs can result in the loss of the entire shipment.

WestComTrans organizes international banana shipping by sea, air, road, and rail transport, as well as multimodal schemes combining different modes of delivery. We take on the entire cargo journey door-to-door: booking a reefer container, freight, customs clearance, phytosanitary control, and delivery to the warehouse — with no intermediaries and a single responsible party at every stage.

Why Shipping Bananas Is a Complex Logistics Challenge

Bananas are picked green, so that ripening happens once they’re already at the recipient’s warehouse. From that point on, the fruit is sensitive to three factors:

  • Temperature. Below +12°C, bananas suffer cold-chain damage — the peel darkens, and the flavor is irreversibly ruined. Above +15°C, premature ripening begins, and the shipment can ripen right inside the container.
  • Ethylene. Bananas release a gas that speeds up ripening in nearby fruit, so they can’t be transported together with most other fruits and vegetables.
  • Humidity and ventilation. At humidity below 85%, the fruit dries out and shrivels; with poor ventilation, CO₂ builds up and ripening accelerates uncontrollably.

That’s exactly why shipping bananas is only possible in specialized refrigerated containers with continuous monitoring, handled by an experienced freight forwarder who tracks every stage — from loading to unloading.

Modes of Transport for International Banana Shipping

The choice of transport depends on where the shipment originates, the ripeness stage of the fruit, and how urgent the delivery is.

Mode of Transport Delivery Time When It’s Used
Sea (reefer containers) 20–35 days The primary method for large shipments from Latin America, optimal in terms of cost
Air 2–3 days Urgent deliveries, shipments of ripe or ripening bananas with a short shelf life
Road Depends on the leg Domestic Russian and regional delivery from ports to the warehouse, shipments from CIS countries
Rail Depends on the leg Delivery to remote warehouses, combined with a sea leg
Multimodal Optimized for the route Combination of transport modes to reduce cost and timelines on non-standard routes

We select the scheme for each specific shipment: sea via Novorossiysk or St. Petersburg for the main volume, air for urgent or small deliveries, and road or rail for further distribution to warehouses.

Countries of Origin and Delivery Routes

The main supplier of bananas to the Russian market is Ecuador: according to Rosselkhoznadzor data, 835,000 tons of bananas were imported from that country between the start of 2026 and mid-July — around 97% of Russia’s total banana imports over that period. Additional shipments come from Colombia, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.
The standard route is by sea via a transshipment port in Panama, arriving at Novorossiysk or St. Petersburg. Using reliable ocean carriers, transit time is 20–35 days, depending on the country of dispatch and port congestion.

Phytosanitary Control: What’s Important to Know in 2026

Since 2025, Rosselkhoznadzor has maintained concerns about Ecuador’s banana quality control system: the agency has difficulty inspecting the roughly two thousand producers and exporters involved in the supply chain. As a result:

  • all products arriving from Ecuador undergo mandatory disinfection procedures;
  • temporary restrictions on shipments from individual exporters are periodically introduced when quarantine pests are found in a shipment.

This means that when choosing a supplier and processing cargo, it’s important to check their current status in the Rosselkhoznadzor register in advance — we monitor these restrictions at the booking stage, so a shipment doesn’t end up blocked while already en route.

Timelines and Cost of Shipping

The exact cost depends on several factors:

  • shipment volume (number of containers, from 6 containers per week for regular deliveries);
  • mode of transport and route;
  • the need to consolidate cargo with other shipments;
  • seasonality and port congestion.

We work directly with shipping lines and terminals at the ports of origin, which allows us to eliminate intermediary markups and keep shipping costs at a competitive level.

Customs Clearance and Documents for Importing Bananas

Bananas fall under HS heading 0803 (code 0803 90 100 0) and are cleared under a simplified scheme as a perishable product. The base duty rate is 4%, but no less than €0.015 per kilogram; import VAT is 20% (the reduced rate does not apply to bananas).
Import requires:

  • Phytosanitary certificate — mandatory, issued in the exporting country;
  • Invoice and packing list;
  • Certificate of origin (CT-1 for CIS countries — grants eligibility for preferential customs clearance);
  • Supply contract;
  • Declaration of conformity with TR TS 021/2011 “On the Safety of Food Products” and TR TS 022/2011 “Food Products in Terms of Their Labeling”.

Clearance is only possible at a customs post equipped with a phytosanitary laboratory. Errors in documents — mismatched addresses on the invoice and waybill, inconsistent document languages, the supplier’s status in the Rosselkhoznadzor register — lead to the cargo being held at the bonded warehouse (SVKh), fines, and, in the worst case, a ban on importing the shipment. We prepare the full document package in advance and support the cargo at every stage of phytosanitary and customs control, to prevent downtime for this perishable product.

Banana Packaging and Labeling

The fruit is packed in double-layer corrugated boxes weighing around 20 kg, with a protective film added when needed to slow ripening. Bananas cannot be transported in the same container as most other fruits due to the ethylene they release.
Each package must be labeled in Russian in accordance with TR TS 022/2011: the EAC mark, product name, net weight, date of manufacture, storage conditions, shelf life, and the manufacturer and importer with their addresses. Missing or incorrect labeling is a common cause of cargo delays at customs.

“Bananas are one of the most temperamental cargo types in our practice: just a couple of hours of a reefer container sitting idle without power at a transshipment port can ruin an entire shipment. That’s why we monitor the temperature regime and supplier status at every stage — from booking in Ecuador through to unloading at a warehouse in Novorossiysk. Our goal is for the client to get not just transport, but guaranteed fresh cargo with no surprises at customs.” – Alexander Morozov, Logistics Specialist at WestComTrans

Ответы на частые вопросы

For unripe fruit — +13…+14°C, for ripening fruit — +15…+18°C. Lowering the temperature below +12°C causes irreversible cold-chain damage to the peel.

A phytosanitary certificate, invoice, packing list, certificate of origin (CT-1 for CIS countries), and a declaration of conformity with CU technical regulations are mandatory. We prepare and check the full document package before shipment.

By sea via a transshipment port — 20–35 days, depending on the route and port congestion. Air delivery takes 2–3 days and is used for urgent shipments.

Yes, Rosselkhoznadzor periodically introduces temporary restrictions on individual exporters when violations of phytosanitary requirements are detected, and all products from Ecuador undergo mandatory disinfection procedures. We check the supplier’s current status before processing a shipment.

Generally, no: bananas release ethylene, which speeds up ripening in nearby fruit. Exceptions are certain fruit types with low ethylene sensitivity, but joint loading needs to be arranged in advance.
