Pitahaya, or dragon fruit, is one of the exotic fruits most demanding of logistics. The shelf life of a fresh fruit doesn’t exceed 3–5 days, and if the temperature regime is broken, it loses its marketable condition within a single day. That’s why shipping pitahaya isn’t just about moving cargo from point A to point B — it’s a coordinated chain: transport selection, maintaining the cold chain, expedited customs clearance, and precise timeline calculation.
WestComTrans organizes turnkey international pitahaya shipping — from pickup at the supplier in the country of origin through to customs release and delivery to a warehouse in Russia. We work with a single operator, so you don’t have to coordinate the actions of several contractors or lose time at the handoffs between stages.
Special Considerations in Shipping Pitahaya
Pitahaya is imported into Russia mainly from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and China, and in season from Israel and Spain. The fruit is grown on cactus-like vines and picked unripe to withstand transport, so even a small deviation from the temperature regime accelerates spoilage.
Key challenges:
- short shelf life — the cargo can’t be delayed at the border or at a temporary storage warehouse;
- mandatory phytosanitary control — customs clearance is impossible without it;
- sensitivity to temperature and humidity fluctuations during transfers between modes of transport.

Ways to Ship Pitahaya Internationally
The choice of transport depends on shipment volume, budget, and permissible transit time.
| Mode of Transport | Delivery Time from Asia | When It’s Used |
|---|---|---|
| Air shipping | 1–3 days (including connections) | Small and medium shipments of fresh fruit, when timing is critical |
| Multimodal (sea + road/rail) | 20–35 days | Large volumes, when the fruit partially ripens in transit or for longer-keeping varieties |
| Sea shipping (ports of Novorossiysk, St. Petersburg) | 20–35 days | Wholesale shipments with refrigerated containers available and steady demand |
| Road | Depends on the route, from the transshipment point | The final leg from the port/airport to the recipient’s warehouse |
| Rail | Depends on the route | Part of a multimodal scheme, to lower the cost of the “overland” leg |
For pitahaya, we most often recommend air delivery for the main leg — this preserves marketable condition — or a multimodal scheme if the shipment is large and part of the route can shift to cheaper transport without compromising quality.
Countries of Origin
The main countries exporting pitahaya to the Russian market:
- Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia — stable volumes, established routes;
- China — large shipments, mainly by rail and road via border crossings;
- Israel, Spain — seasonal shipments, more often by air.
We arrange shipping from any of these countries, including coordination with a broker in the country of dispatch, if required by local legislation.
Storage and Transport Conditions
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Temperature | +5…+10°C |
| Relative humidity | 85–95% |
| Transport | Refrigerated containers, refrigerated trucks with temperature control |
| Packaging | Plastic/cardboard trays inside outer packaging — plastic or wooden crates, corrugated boxes |
Fruit of the same variety and size is packed separately, with no mechanical damage or foreign odors. We monitor storage conditions at every handoff point — when unloading at the port or airport, at the bonded warehouse (SVKh), and when handing over for the final leg.
Customs Clearance of Pitahaya
The HS code for fresh pitahaya is 0810 90 200 0. The import duty is 0%, and VAT is 10% (the reduced rate for fruit and berries remains in place even after the standard VAT rate was raised to 22% in January 2026).
Stages of clearance:
- Classifying the product under the HS code and checking the document package.
- Submitting the customs declaration (DT) electronically.
- Calculating and paying customs charges.
- Phytosanitary control in the presence of a Rosselkhoznadzor representative — only at border crossing points equipped with a phytosanitary laboratory.
- Cargo release and handover for delivery.
Pitahaya is classified as a perishable product, so clearance is handled under an expedited scheme where possible — a delay at the bonded warehouse (SVKh) of more than a day means a risk of the shipment spoiling and additional storage costs.
Documents and Certification
Importing pitahaya requires:
- foreign trade contract and invoice;
- phytosanitary certificate from the country of dispatch (a mandatory reference to EEC Council Decision No. 157 dated November 30, 2016 in item 14 — without it, Rosselkhoznadzor will refuse to let the shipment through);
- declaration of conformity with TR TS 021/2011 “On the Safety of Food Products” and TR TS 022/2011 “Food Products in Terms of Their Labeling”;
- certificate of origin (Form A or CT-1) — if tariff preferences need to be applied;
- consignment documentation.
The manufacturer must also be registered in the Rosselkhoznadzor register — without this, the phytosanitary certificate won’t be accepted.
Common Mistakes in Clearance
- Mismatched data in the documents — different addresses or names on the invoice and waybill lead to delays at the border.
- Missing the reference to EEC Decision No. 157 in the phytosanitary certificate — grounds for a fine and a ban on importing the shipment.
- Understated customs value or incorrect HS code — customs regularly detects such cases, resulting in additional charges and fines.
We check the document package before the declaration is submitted, to rule out such delays — for perishable cargo, every day of downtime is costly.

“Pitahaya can’t be shipped ‘however it works out’ — it’s counted in hours. We calculate the route and temperature regime in advance, so the fruit arrives at the client’s warehouse fresh, not with a claim for write-off. That’s exactly why, for perishable cargo, we always offer several logistics options — tailored to the customer’s specific volume and budget.” – Alexander Morozov, Logistics Specialist at WestComTrans

Ответы на частые вопросы
Air delivery — 1–3 days, including connecting flights. Sea or multimodal shipping — 20–35 days, depending on the country of dispatch and port congestion.
Code 0810 90 200 0, import duty 0%, VAT 10% — the reduced rate for fruit applies, and the increase in the standard VAT rate to 22% as of 2026 doesn’t affect it.
Yes, it’s mandatory for every shipment and is issued in the country of dispatch. Without a reference to EEC Council Decision No. 157 in item 14, the certificate won’t be accepted at the border.
Yes, provided a unified temperature regime is maintained for all products in the shipment — this is confirmed at the route-planning stage.
Air delivery is preferable for preserving marketable condition. Sea or multimodal shipping suits large shipments where a longer transit time is acceptable.
